9 11 TX Jaycees Commemoration

Posted by admin On September - 4 - 2009

Hello US Jaycees!

We have an opportunity to come together as an organization and nation and spread our support across this nation.  And what a better organization than the United States Jaycees!  Even better if we did it around the world!  People from around this country and world supported all the families of those lives lost on September 11, 2001.

I came across this message and I knew we as an organization can make a statement to support those lives lost and for those who are fighting for our continued freedom!  Please pass this to your chapters and members and together let’s make a statement!

September 11th, 2009
We have 11 days and counting to get the word out all across this great land and into every community in the United States of America.

THE PROGRAM:
On Friday, September 11th, 2009, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States. Every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag on the eighth anniversary of one of our country’s worst tragedies. We do this to honor  those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.

In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn’t take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag is the fabric of our country and together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds.

Action Plan:
So, here’s what we need you to do as a great organization – Fly an American flag of any size on 9/11. Honestly, Americans should fly the flag year-round, but if you don’t, then at least make it a priority on this day.

9-11-commemorance

The 9-11 Commemorative Banner is a 21x31 ft banner made of 3014 miniature (4x6inch) flags representing each victim of 9-11. First hung at Ground Zero medical site, and then St George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island, the Pentagon, the USS Battleship NJ, New York's Hotel, and now Al Faw Palace, Iraq.

The Texas Veterans Land Board asked us to help and participation in their annual Veterans Benefit Fair.  We provided free entertainment, such as face painting for the kids and a chance to win various prizes.  We were donated a “Wheel of Fortune” and invited everyone attending to spin for a chance to win various prizes, ranging from a huge oriental sword, a free hotel get-away weekend, handmade birdhouses, ceramic pots, candles, pens, calculators and our lucky rubber duckies all dressed in different outfits.  Everyone won something. We offered free face and tattoo painting.  The vets and their families had a ball.  There were over 1,900 people attending.  We were working and playing nonstop from 8:30am until after 1:00pm, when they closed.  This is the first time the Veterans Benefit Fair has offered free entertainment.  The Veterans really enjoyed our involvement and everyone won a prize.  The kids really loved the face painting and the adults were asking for arm tattoos. The Veterans Land Board was thrilled that we came and donated our time and prizes.  We also sponsored VFW Post 2429.  They attended and recruited for their Post.  The Fair was a great success and served many Veterans, helped solve problems and explained many of the benefits that they have earned and just did not know how to receive.

The event was Saturday August 29, 2009 from 10am to 1pm.   It was in the Amon G Carter Exhibit Hall next to Will Rogers Hall in Fort Worth, Texas.

We were invited to attend next year’s event in Dallas.  It will be our honor to help again, and it was great fun for our members.

Members attending were Sabrena Durham, Lacy Durham, Kelli McMullen, Christine Green and sponsors Lori Durham, Melodye Green, Kathy Howey and Linda McMullen.

Thank you
